Premier League release statement on why Son was sent off after Andre Gomes’ shocking leg injury for Everton

THE Premier League have acted to explain why Spurs’ Son Heung-min was sent off after a horrific injury to Andrew Gomes – despite referee Martin Atkinson initially getting just his yellow card out.

After Everton midfielder Gomes suffered a suspected broken leg in the 1-1 draw, the Prem said: “The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge.”

Gomes tumbled after a late challenge from Son and twisted horribly when he collided with Tottenham defender Serge Aurier.

Portugal star Gomes, 26, was taken to hospital after ten minutes of treatment on the pitch.

Atkinson held a yellow card by his side when medics rushed on.

But once Gomes was taken off the ref changed his verdict to a straight red.

Son barely noticed as his head was in his hands as he cried.

‘NOT HIS FAULT’

And Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino immediately substituted a distraught-looking Aurier.

Both Son and Aurier were comforted by players from both teams.

And there appeared no animosity towards the pair from Everton.

Spurs midfielder Dele Alli, whose 63rd minute opener was cancelled out deep into the 12 minutes of stoppage time by Cenk Tosun, also cleared Son of blame.

Alli told Sky Sports: “Didn’t want to look too much at what happened. I want to send best wishes.

“Son is devastated and in tears. It’s not his fault.

“Son is one of nicest people you’ve ever met. He can’t even lift his head up, he’s crying so much.”
