Kabloona in the Yellow Kayak

Another of my recent second-hand acquisitions:-

KABLOONA IN THE YELLOW KAYAK. One Woman's Journey Through the Northwest Passage.

Author: Victoria Jason
Publisher: Turnstone Press 1995

During the summers of 1991 through 1994 Victoria Jason and two male companions set out to kayak from Churchill, Manitoba to Tuktoyaktuk on the Beaufort Sea. When she set out in 1991 she was still recovering from the second of two strokes. In the first summer Fred dropped out due to injury and Victoria suffered internal bleeding ulcers. The second year Victoria and Don reached Gjoa Haven, where Victoria had to drop out, suffering from edema caused by excessive fatigue. Don continued but had to be rescued later, suffering from severe frostbite, just short of Tuktoyaktuk. Victoria returned North the following two summers and completed the journey alone from west to east, paddling from Fort Providence on the Mckenzie River to Paulatuk in 1993, and from Paulatuk to Gjoa Haven in 1994.

A hefty volume. Good maps, nice photographs and an interesting read about the journey, the wildlife, the tundra and the Inuit people - but I got confused about the reason and motive for the journey. She need not have put herself through such hardships just to fulfill a desire to paddle in Arctic waters.

Regards,
Nick
