Mountain Biking Snowdonia – Tour du Moel Siabod
After yesterdays soaking in the Rhynnogau I was all set to get wet again today, especially as I drew back the curtains to see nothing but cloud this morning. I had decided to start a ride from Capel Curig as I knew I could meet up with Huw and hand back the bike he had been kind enough to lend me last week for our family holiday to Braemar.
Pete Bursnalls book “Mountain Bike Guide North Wales” once again provided the inspiration for my route choice – the tour of Moel Siabod. Having enjoyed a brew in the Siabod Cafe with Huw and Gavin I set off for a bit of a road bash past a beautiful Llyn Mymbyr and on down towards Llyn Gwynant before heading up a steep trail (carry) to Bwlch y Rhediad. As I gained height the views were stunning and I headed into an area I hadn’t visited before on the Eastern flanks of Carnedd y Cribau. The first section was pretty boggy and had a fair amount of pushing but once I had crossed the river the track improved and I enjoyed a lovely descent down to Blaenau Dolwyddelan.
My route took me along lanes and tracks that stayed on the flank of the hills meaning that I slowly dropped down past Dolwyddelan Castle and into the village where I was able to top of my food supplies at the Spar.
The pull out of the village was on a lovely old track that lead over the flanks of Moel Siabod to give some lovely riding in and out of the trees and back down to the cafe to finish. A lovely ride that I can only imagine would be even better when the ground is a bit dryer – it rewards the road bash and carry that are its introduction!
