HAYWARD — The victim of a fatal stabbing aboard a BART train at the South Hayward station Tuesday afternoon was an Oakland man who had tried to stop his killer from stealing another passenger’s shoes, authorities said.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim Wednesday as 49-year-old Oliver Williams.

The suspect in Williams’ killing, 39-year-old Jermaine Brim, was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder and attempted carjacking after he was arrested a block from the BART station. Brim was held without bail is set to make his first appearance in court Thursday at Dublin’s East County Hall of Justice, jail records show.

According to BART officials, Brim, who said he was from Sacramento, tried to steal shoes from a person who was sleeping on the Warm Springs-bound train around 1 p.m. Tuesday, when Williams intervened.

He and Brim got into a fight during which Williams took out a knife. The two struggled over the knife before Brim took control of it and stabbed Williams multiple times, authorities said. Williams died on the train.

Brim was arrested on Tennyson Road after the alleged attempted carjacking.
