A TOILET seat and a mop are among the worst Christmas presents people have received from their other half, a study has revealed.

Whether you buy your presents in July or rush around the shops on Christmas Eve, getting gifts for our loved ones is always tricky.

Sometimes it’s very obvious you’ve been given a last minute present, with Brits revealing they’ve unwrapped a McDonald’s toy and a bag of rice on December 25.

The study, by Beaverbrooks, revealed the top 20 worst gifts people have received from their other half.

The most hated gift was a mop, followed by a shoehorn, and in third place was a vacuum cleaner.

And making up the top five was a toilet seat and an air freshener.

The study of 2,000 adults found women are more likely than men to tell their partner they don’t like the present – and will drop more hints about what they do want.

The findings also revealed 87 per cent of women would most like a holiday, followed by 81 per cent eyeing up a necklace or flowers, while 80 per cent want a ring.

But clothing, shoes and underwear are among the gifts blokes rarely get right – with one in 20 women admitting their man gets it wrong every time.

Although men are more generous than women, spending on average £180, while women only fork out £130.

More than half of women – 52 per cent – would be most upset if they received cleaning products, 37 per cent would hate cookery lessons while 33 per cent would be unimpressed to unwrap something for their car.

Meanwhile most men, 80 per cent, would also like a holiday, and three-quarters want a new car.

Three quarters would also be content with chocolate, but 73 per cent would prefer cash over a gift.

Men would be most offended by any exercise-related gifts, with 35 per cent saying a gym membership wouldn’t be well received, and a further 25 per cent would be offended by workout equipment.

Sensibly, around a quarter of couples choose gifts together, although those who have been in a relationship for longer than seven years have returned a gift without telling their partner.

Which is wise as 15 per cent of those polled said they’ve dumped someone who got them a rubbish present.

But it’s worrying news for the one in 10 blokes who admitted they’ll be running around the shops on Christmas Eve to try and find their loved ones a gift.

Lorna Haddon, head of diamonds and jewellery at Beaverbrooks: “Our research shows that many couples still struggle when it comes to finding that dream gift.

“Whether it’s taking the time to choose something special together, or dropping subtle hints about what you might like to receive – there are plenty of things couples can do to make sure they are getting it right every time.”
