Labour leadership odds – who will be the next party leader?
CORBYN’S grip on power is all but gone and his resignation is on the cards, here’s who is most likely to replace him according to the bookies.
The top five list is very female-friendly, with four of the five top contenders who are likely to sweep the top spot being women.
Rebecca Long-Bailey: 38% (odds of 13/8)
The Shadow Business Secretary is a fierce Corbyn supporter and is the current favourite, with Betfair putting her at 13/8.
She grew up in Old Trafford, Manchester, and worked as a customer service assistant in a pawn shop, before becoming an MP.
On her website, she describes herself as a proud socialist.
Lisa Nandy: 22% (odds of 7/2)
The Wigan MP has held her seat since 2010 and has previously served as Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change in 2015 and 2016.
The 40-year-old was her constituency’s first female MP and one of the first Asian female MPs in the UK.
Keir Starmer: 12.5% (odds of 7/1)
Sir Keir is notable for clashing with Corbyn, on Brexit.
The Shadow Brexit Secretary has openly campaigned for a second referendum.
The favourite was a human rights lawyer before becoming an MP.
Angela Rayner: 11% (odds of 8/1)
John McDonnell named Angela as the next possible leader.
Speaking to GQ in October, he said whoever comes after Corbyn “has got to be a woman”.
Jess Phillips 7.7% (odds 12/1)
Jess Phillips has been the MP for Birmingham Yardley since May 2015.
She has strong familial links to the NHS and health
She has been heavily involved throughout her career in fighting domestic abuse in the West Midlands.
