Even before Game of Thrones began airing its final season, audiences wondered what could step in to replace it? Since HBO's critical and commercial juggernaut hit the airwaves it's stoked the conversations about high fantasy and how it's changed in the wake of The Lord of the Rings. Netflix, always interested in having its finger on the pulse, immediately announced plans to adapt Andrzej Sapkowski's series of books and the finished product is the new series, The Witcher.The comparisons to HBO's series are evident but what creator Lauren Schmidt does is blend GoT's grit and complex storytelling into a plot that, at times, almost seems light and whimsical. It's a show that will please people who believed Game of Thrones was too self-serious while inhabiting the same mythological world for fans of HBO's epic storytelling.
