Father dies trying to save daughter at Carmel beach

A father died trying to save his daughter Tuesday afternoon from floating out to sea off a Monterey County beach, according to preliminary information from Cal Fire officials.

Rescuers responded at 12:30 p.m. to Carmel River State Beach, at 26478 Carmelo St.

Cal Fire Capt. Greg Leonard said it appears the daughter, 10 years old, was on
an inflatable device that was carrying her farther from the shore, and her father went in to get her.

Rescuers arrived to reports that a father and girl were struggling in the water, and they pulled both to land. But the father died later at a hospital, Cal Fire officials said.

The girl was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula with symptoms of possible hypothermia.
