As Iranians the world over watched news of the retaliatory Iranian missile attack on an Iraqi base housing U.S. troops on Jan. 7, the fear and uncertainty of what could unfold next left many of us shaken and glued to our screens. But for Iranians in Canada, within just a few hours that fear turned into distress, shock and, ultimately, heartbreak. The crash of Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 sent Iranian-Canadians scrambling for information, whether frantically texting loved ones on WhatsApp and Telegram, or calling friends and neighbours in their communities in the hopes of learning about loved ones. It was soon clear that the crash had claimed the lives of all 176 passengers on board – including 63 Canadians citizens out of the 138 passengers destined for Canada.
