UK weather forecast: Snow blankets north before -5C PLUNGE and ‘severe’ wind and rain, Met Office warns
SNOW has blanketed the north as temperatures are set to lows of -5C – and severe gusts with rain will continue to sweep the country.
A weather front swept across the country overnight, bringing the strongest winds with it across the north.
Snow already blanketed parts of Cumbria, Northumberland and Durham with 4cm last night.
And it will bring heavy rain from the south west, before it lurks across the south east and the home counties.
Wind is predicted to hit at up to 70mph in north Wales and England throughout the evening and into Saturday.
Four weather warnings of wind and rain are in place on Saturday, lasting from 3am until 6pm.
One of the yellow warnings says: “Persistent and heavy rain will develop through Friday night.
“There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.”
Forecasters expect the strong winds to cause travel chaos, and the persistent heavy rain may cause flooding in some areas.
A Met Office forecaster said: “Showers lurking throughout today will be heavy and thundery, while it is a dry day for central and northern Scotland.
“But another weather front will creep in overnight tomorrow, bringing a narrow band of rain which will become heavy on Friday night.
“There will be a risk of ice as temperatures plummet.”

Before the wind and rain sweeps in, snow is expected to fall on higher ground in the north of England today.
Snowfall across Northumbria, the Pennines, the North Yorks Moors and Southern Uplands is predicted.
Temperatures are set to drop in the north, with cloud and rain expected to arrive in England, Wales and southern Scotland through Thursday.
Friday should see a frosty start for most, before heavy rain in the north and Scotland.
And although windy and rainy for much of the northern areas, Saturday should be more mild in temperature, before Sunday sends the mercury down again.

As January goes on the Met Office predicts we could see more snow at lower levels as temperatures drop.
The long range forecast says: “During the last couple of weeks of January, the northwest should see the wettest and windiest weather whilst further south should be drier and brighter with an increased risk of frost and fog overnight.
“Snow will be most likely over northern hills, but it could fall to lower levels at times in the north during colder interludes.”
