Lukashenko: Gazprom makes 3 times more money from Belarus than from Germany
MINSK – Gazprom makes three times as much money selling natural gas to Belarus as to Germany, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.
“The 75-year anniversary of the Great Victory. Everybody is making so much noise about this wherever possible – both in Russia and in Belarus. But today Gazprom makes three times as much money from Belarus as it does from Germany. Is that okay? No, it’s not okay,” the state news agency BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying while speaking at an award ceremony for Belarusian culture, art, and sports figures on Jan. 9.
Lukashenko additionally said he would insist on Belarus being entitled to gas prices equal to those charged inside Russia, based on agreements reached while Gazprom was buying the Belarusian gas transport system (formerly known as Beltransgaz, currently called Gazprom Transgaz Belarus).
“When we agreed to sell Beltransgaz in 2011 [for $5 billion within four years], there was a strict agreement that we would be granted a domestic Russian price for gas in five years. Someone has forgotten that, but I remember. Therefore, I insist on this being fulfilled,” he said.
