Paul Scholes blasts Anthony Martial for ‘labouring and not busting gut to get into box’ as Man Utd fly out to Bruges

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes has questioned whether Anthony Martial is good enough to lead the line as the Red Devils prepare to face Club Brugge.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have flown out to Bruges for their Europa League Round of 32 first leg clash against the Belgium outfit on Thursday.

United go into the match on the back off a 2-0 win against Chelsea – a game in which Martial opened the scoring with a deft header in the first half.

But despite the French forward netting his 13th goal of the season, Scholes is of the belief that the 24-year-old’s lack of desire to get into the box isn’t good enough.

Speaking of the ex-Monaco ace, he said: “With Anthony Martial, it’s interesting, I don’t know if he’s a wide player, I don’t know if he’s a centre forward.

“Ole clearly thinks there’s a centre forward in there and he’s telling him to get in the box as often as he can.

“[Against Chelsea] he laboured at times to get in the box, he didn’t really bust a gut.

“You shouldn’t need to [tell a striker to get into the penalty box], but if you’re Anthony Martial he looks like he needs telling.

“He looks like he doesn’t take that much information in. Some players are like that, sometimes you tell them once and they’ll do it all the time.

“He looks like you need to tell him every two minutes, what you want him to do.”

Martial could be entrusted to lead the line against Brugge for Thursday’s 5.55pm kick-off, though Odion Ighalo is also in the mix to start.

Mason Greenwood is another player that will be desperate to be named as United’s front man in the starting XI.

Solskjaer could opt to play the likes of Daniel James and Juan Mata on the wings, with Bruno Fernandes expected to slot in at the No10 position.
