Former India captain and Arjuna awardee Waikhom Surajlata Devi, who is a mother of two, has said that she had been suffering physical and mental abuse over dowry since getting married to Shantakumar in 2005. She led India to a historic CWG gold in women's hockey in 2002. Her story of struggle and success inspired one of the characters in 'Chak De! India'.
