Young Brit couple died after reversing buggy off 650ft cliff while doing a U-turn on Greek island
A YOUNG Brit couple killed in a crash on the Greek island of Santorini were trying to make a U-turn when their hired buggy fell off a cliff, an inquest heard today.
Toby and Milly Savill, both 25, had been driving on Santorini’s Profitis Ilias mountain before they plunged 656ft into a ravine.
Coroner Shanta Deonarine concluded they died from multiple injuries.
It was not known who was driving at the time of the crash on April 14 last year.
The coroner said a witness had told Greek police the couple had tried to turn the buggy around before falling off the edge.
There was no wall on the side of the cliff.
The emergency services were called but struggled to reach the couple on the rocky terrain beneath Profitis Ilias, the highest mountain on the island and a popular spot with holidaymakers.
Eight firefighters in two vehicles attended and the couple’s bodies were eventually removed from the ravine early the next morning.
The couple were officially declared dead at Fira General Hospital.
Ms Deonarine recorded the deaths as the result of a road accident.
EASTER TRAGEDY
In a statement read out at the inquest, Milly’s dad Steve Coulson said the families didn’t want to know who was driving as they didn’t want to attribute blame to anyone.
Mr Coulson, a vicar at St Mark’s church in Kennington, south London, said: “We’re not interested in how they died, we’re just interested in how they lived.”
He added: “An iPad of theirs that was recovered had 72 photos which were taken a couple of hours before the accident.
“It’s a comfort to know they were having a good time on holiday. They were just two people having fun – just as they lived for 25 years.
“Their last minutes were spent having fun.”
The tragedy happened on the second day of their Easter break.
