Star Wars: Rogue One Prequel TV Show Faces Same Challenge As The Movie

0

The upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One prequel series coming to Disney+ will face the same story challenge as the movie, says star Diego Luna. In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans for a new Star Wars trilogy and movie spinoffs, one of which was Rogue One. The movie told the story of how Rebels got their hands on the plans for the Death Star, a story fans already know the ending of because it sets up the very first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

After the success of the 2016 Star Wars film, the franchise continued to expand. Rogue One ended with Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Luna) sacrificing themselves in order to secure the Death Star schematics for the Rebel Alliance. After the movie's release and the announcement of Disney+, plans were made to make a series out of the movie. Luna is set to come back as Andor and he explains that even though his character dies in the end of the movie, there are different ways of telling a person's story.

In an interview with IndieWire, Luna spoke about the challenges of doing a Cassian Andor prequel show, especially when fans already know how his story ends. The series will be focused on Andor during his earlier days with the Rebellion. Luna said:

The thing I can tell you, and it’s a nice challenge and it’s a great way to approach a show, but what happens when you already know the ending? Then it becomes about the story. Everything is in how you tell the story and how many different layers you can find. ... If you think about it, Rogue One started with the same task. The last scene of Rogue One is a scene we all know. It makes another part of your brain work [as a storyteller]. You can’t use the same formulas for storytelling you’ve known all your life with this because it’s very different. The big thing is now we start with a character that people already know what he’s capable of.

In addition to Luna, other well known cast and crew members are set to work on this project. Rogue One co-writer Tony Gilroy will be returning for the series. He will be working on the project as the director for several episodes and has reportedly written the pilot episode of the upcoming series. Right by Andor's side will be the android K-2SO played by Alan Tudyk. It's unclear what the story for the series is, but it will depict Andor and his android in their early days in the fight against the Empire.

Although all the details of the prequel series have yet to be revealed, the origin story of Andor will give the fans something to look forward too. With the COVID-19 crisis going on, TV series and movies have been delayed and/or canceled. However, the series isn't expected to appear on the streaming service until 2021 and it remains to be seen if the Rogue One prequel will be affected by the Hollywood shutdowns. Until the crisis comes to an end, fans can speculate about what the Star Wars: Rogue One prequel series has in store.
