Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signaled schools in his state could reopen soon. During a virtual meeting with education leaders this week, DeSantis stated classes could be back in session by May, but only if it’s safe.
He pointed out the low risk the virus has posed to school age kids and cited the fact that around five to 10 kids die each year from the flu in Florida.
Schools in the Sunshine State have been closed since March. Classes moved online, which provided a unique challenge for teachers, students and parents alike.
“There’s probably not been one aspect of society that’s had a more broad-based effect on than our education system, because we have millions of people involved in it,” stated the governor. “We want kids to be in school, I think most parents want that, so we’re going to continue to look, see how this develops and then make a decision there.”
He also mentioned that some areas may have to close again once opened if the threat of an outbreak becomes an issue.
