According to the director of the CDC, the U.S. is finally making significant headway closing in on the peak of the coronavirus. During an interview this week, Robert Redfield claimed the nation could finally see the other side of the curve and predicted that the outbreak will continue to decline in coming weeks.

Redfield credited the country’s practice of aggressive social distancing for the declining results. He added the U.S. mortality rate is a lot lower than previously predicted.

“As you know, we have one of the most powerful weapons against this virus, we are not defenseless. That weapon is the social distance, it still is social distancing. This virus has a very significant weakness, it cannot swim 7 feet. If we could just maximize social distancing, we can limit this virus’s ability.” – Robert Redfield, Director of the CDC

Redfield went on to say there is still work to be done. He also noted that U.S. public health infrastructure will also need to be augmented before the country and economy reopens.

According to the latest data from multiple health agencies, including the CDC and World Health Organization, the U.S. has more than 502,000 active cases of coronavirus.

As of Friday, over 18,000 people have died and over 28,000 have recovered in the U.S. alone. Health officials expect cases will continue to rise in the next few weeks before leveling off.

The number of overall cases around the world has surpassed 1.6 million, with the global death toll above 102,000. The total number of global recoveries continues to climb, rising above 375,000.
