Kim’s Convenience: 5 Times Janet Was Terrible To Gerald (& Vice Versa)
Canadian sitcom Kim's Convenience, which just dropped its fourth season on Netflix, features plenty of hilarious and dramatic moments for the Kim family. Throughout the series, viewers have gotten to know the relationship between Janet and her best friend Gerald. The pair become roommates in the second season, and plenty of disagreements and awkward moments ensue.
However, we see a completely different side to Janet and Gerald in the season 4 finale that could potentially ruin their friendship forever. Until season 5 drops, let's take a look back at some of their worst moments as best friends.
10 Janet: Gives Gerald The Wrong Email Address For Their Mentor
In the third season, Janet and Chelsea are at a cafe grabbing a coffee when Janet spots legendary magazine editor Rhonda Mills. Janet is flustered and star-struck at the sight of her but Chelsea doesn't allow Janet's shyness get in the way. She calls Rhonda's name and the two begin to chit-chat. Rhonda ends up giving Janet her email address so the two could connect.
However, before she has the energy to email her, Gerald finds out and asks for her email address too. Instead of giving it to him outright, Janet gives him the wrong email so she could email Rhonda first. Things get trickier when a woman named Rhonda responds to Gerald's email and the real Rhonda gave Janet a fake email.
9 Gerald: Shoots Janet's Parents' Headshots
In the first season, Gerald asks Mr. Kim if he can take his headshot for a school project. Appa declines and kicks him out of the store because he thinks Gerald wants to shoot him in the nude. Gerald decides to take Umma's headshots instead and they turn out lovely.
So lovely in fact that Mr. Kim is now interested in Gerald taking his headshot. To make room for Gerald's picture, Appa takes Janet's picture of Umma off the wall, making her feel pushed aside.
8 Janet: Makes Chelsea Move In With Them For The Amenities
When Gerald starts dating Chelsea, he doesn't think they have much in common and plans on breaking up with her but he can't figure out how. She's constantly around and never seems to take a hint. By the third season, Chelsea is in their apartment all the time and it's getting on Gerald and Janet's nerves.
When Gerald finally dares to end things with Chelsea, she tells Janet that she's making cupcakes, ordered HBO for their TV, and subscribed them to her favorite magazines. The perks of having Chelsea as a roommate are too good to have Gerald get rid of her so Janet convinces her to stay.
7 Gerald: Chooses Dree Over Janet
In the second season, we meet Dree, the cool girl in all of Janet and Gerald's art classes. In "Appa's First Text," Gerald is invited to dinner with Dree and her friends, which makes Janet feel left out. She tried becoming friends with Dree but it didn't work out.
Gerald tells Janet he wouldn't go to dinner with them to make her feel better but he ends up going anyway. Funny enough, Janet is at the same restaurant spying on them and catches Gerald in the act.
6 Janet: Her Parents Invade Gerald’s Space
When Gerald borrows Appa's tools and forgets to return them, Appa shows up at their apartment while Janet and Gerald are at school. While he's looking around Gerald's room, he finds out he has a water bed. Appa and Umma immediately dive in to have some afternoon fun but their plan backfires when they pop the mattress. They lie and tell Gerald a crazy raccoon did it but Janet knows the real story. Knowing his roommate's parents had fun times in his bed is enough to be sick over.
5 Gerald: Takes Janet's Job At Kim's Convenience
In the first season, Janet is tired of working at Kim's Convenience without being properly paid. She wants to branch out and do things independently, so she leaves her family's business and gets a job with her brother at Handy. But when Janet finds out she has to work weekends, she realizes working with her parents' wasn't so bad after all.
When she goes back to the convenience store, she finds out her parents gave Gerald her old job. No one told Janet about it and the real kicker was that they were paying Gerald more than minimum wage.
4 Janet: Forces Gerald To Collect Her Cash Prize
In "Silent Auction," Janet finds a toonie and uses it to buy a lotto ticket. After she wins $500, Appa shuts down her excitement when he tells her those who win lottery tickets at the stores they work at can no longer win. To get the cash prize, she convinces Gerald to lie and say he's the one who bought the ticket. The problem is, Gerald also used to work at the store. Gerald begins to panic, and doesn't feel comfortable claiming the prize because winners are announced in the paper, but Janet forces Gerald to do it anyway.
3 Gerald: Talking Behind Her Back To Chelsea
Couples are bound to talk behind a friend's back at least once, but Janet catches Gerald in the act. After talking about a restaurant they wanted to go to, Chelsea starts laughing at her phone. Janet asks her what she's laughing at and she claims it was the emoji Gerald sent her.
When Chelsea goes to the bathroom, Janet looks at her messages on her computer, and can see that Chelsea called her cheap, to which Gerald replied "Classic Janey." Janet, of course, is annoyed and storms out.
2 Janet: Ignores Gerald After They Kissed
In the season 4 finale, Gerald and Janet start talking about their summer apart. Both of them are traveling abroad for internships and probably won't be living together when they got back to Toronto. The thought of no longer being roommates and seeing each other every day gets them emotional, and the two share a kiss. After the kiss, Gerald tries texting and talking to Janet but she ignores him. He needs closure on the situation and Janet never gives him that.
1 Gerald: Ready To Ditch Janet And Live Alone
When Janet and Gerald are gearing up to live together, they plan on rooming with their classmate Samira, but when she drops out, Gerald and Janet are forced to find new accommodations. Gerald is sleeping on the Kims' couch at the time and is desperate for a new living situation, so he bails on Janet to live with a friend. Janet pleads with him to give her time, and even though her pleading works, he was still about to bail on his best friend.
