Wonder Woman 1984 Wasn't Originally Going to Revisit Themyscira
New information has come to light about Wonder Woman 1984's return to Themyscira: it originally wasn't going to be part of the film at all. Wonder Woman 1984 is the sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman, which gave Gal Gadot's Diana Prince her origin story. Though the first film took place during WWI, the new movie will send Diana and Chris Pine's Steve Trevor to the 1980s. There, they'll encounter Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah and Maxwell Lord, both of whom will cause trouble for the heroes. Lord is also rumored to have a hand in Steve's resurrection, since the character sacrificed himself at the end of Wonder Woman.
Themyscira will also play a role in Wonder Woman 1984, with both Diana's mother, Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), and her aunt, Antiope (Robin Wright), returning. Aside from the familial relationship, both women are also important to Diana in other ways; Hippolyta is Queen of the Amazons, while Antiope is their general. Antiope is also responsible for Diana's training, making her death at the start of Wonder Woman even more affecting. Even after leaving Themyscira, Diana's upbringing there has a huge impact on her sense of honor and integrity.
However, thanks to an Empire Magazine cover story (via Syfy Wire), fans now know that flashbacks to Themyscira were reportedly absent from Wonder Woman 1984 at first. However, returning director Patty Jenkins explained, "It made sense to start again with where she [Diana] comes from, to have the juxtaposition to who she is in our world." This information also points to how much Diana will have changed by the time fans see her in Wonder Woman 1984.
Unfortunately, they'll have to wait longer than expected for that moment: following past delays, the movie was recently postponed to August 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this delay, Warner Bros. and DC were hopeful about Wonder Woman 1984 making its June release as recently as last month, continuing marketing on the project. Since then, merchandise, including a LEGO set and Funko Pop doll have teased Cheetah's transformation, which was previously the movie's best kept secret. Fans have also gotten a closer look at the White House fight shown in the trailer, as well as an up-close reveal of Diana's golden armor.
Even though it turns out Wonder Woman 1984 didn't originally include flashbacks to Themyscira, fans should be happy to hear they made the cut. The opening scenes of Wonder Woman are some of the movie's best. In fact, fans enjoyed their time in Themyscira enough for Patty Jenkins to plan a spinoff film focused on the Amazons. Hippolyta herself, Connie Nielsen, recently revealed she's excited about the idea. However, for now, fans can look forward to revisiting Themyscira in Wonder Woman 1984.
