Gamethread: knocking the Galaxy out of the playoffs
Tune in to see the Sounders extract some vengeance on JoeTV at 7:00.
Tonight’s classic game is the first in the series to be selected by fan vote. The 2015 Qualifying Round victory over the LA Galaxy beat out other playoff performances like the 3-0 win over FC Dallas from 2016, the 3-0 win over the Houston Dynamo from 2017, and the 2-0 win against Real Salt Lake from 2019.
Following three playoff exits at the hands of the Galaxy in the Seattle Sounders’ first six seasons, the fourth time proved to be the charm when the two teams met in the MLS Cup Playoffs qualifying round in 2015. An especially active first 25 minutes saw the two sides level at 2-2 after some opportunistic finishing from Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez and some impressive goals from Sebastian Lletget and Gyasi Zardes. That scoreline held until the 73rd minute when the patron saint of tacos, Erik Friberg, gave the Sounders the lead once and for all with an absolute banger from outside the box. The Sounders would eventually fall to FC Dallas in the quarter-finals, but for that night in October they were victorious.
The playoff meeting seemed to signal the tide beginning to turn in what may have been the Sounders’ biggest non-Portland Timbers rival for much of their time in MLS. Since that game the Sounders have only lost to the Galaxy twice in league play, with a +7 goal difference through 10 meetings in that time.
That turning point, those goals are what we’ll celebrate tonight.
