Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Will Feature A Death Promises Director
James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, has revealed at least one character won't make it out of the movie alive. The upcoming MCU film will be Gunn's third time behind the camera for Marvel, following Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, the highly anticipated third entry in the franchise doesn't yet have a release date. This is due to Marvel firing and then rehiring Gunn, which led the director to take on the DCEU film The Suicide Squad in the interim. Filming on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 can't begin until he completes that project.
However, that hasn't stopped Gunn from sharing details about the upcoming movie. Recently, he participated in a watch party for the first Guardians movie and hinted the new film will focus on Rocket Raccoon's backstory, which Gunn has been planning since the very beginning. The director has also confirmed his brother, actor Sean Gunn, will return as Kraglin, while Yondu, who died in the second film, won't unless it's in flashback. Many have also wondered if Chris Hemsworth's Thor will make an appearance, though that will likely be made clearer by the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, which comes out first.
Now, Gunn has taken to Instagram to reveal yet another tease about Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Responding to a fan asking if someone will die in the movie, Gunn simply replied, "Yes." Though his answer is interesting, it also leads to more questions than answers. Since Gunn didn't provide any further details, it's impossible to know if he's talking about a main character or a smaller one. Either way, it probably makes fans a little nervous. Check out Gunn response from his Instagram story below:
Ironically, a character from Guardians of the Galaxy died recently in the MCU: Gamora was murdered by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. She joined heroes Black Widow and Iron Man in dying for the cause. However, unlike the two of them, a younger version of Gamora still exists, and she'll be the one featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Unfortunately, she doesn't know anything about Star-Lord or the other Guardians and only recently joined the heroes' side. It seems likely a good portion of the upcoming film will focus on Peter Quill reminding her of the person she eventually becomes.
Gunn's reveal about the death in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has to also make fans think about Yondu's death in the last movie. The Ravager salute scene is one of the trilogy's most affecting, and it will be hard to top. Of course, if a smaller character dies, comparisons to Yondu's death are probably unnecessary. As of now, MCU fans are still a long way off from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which doesn't even have a release date yet. Until then, they'll only be able to speculate on Gunn's recent reveal.
