Concept art of the creatures from Underwater has been revealed. Underwater released at the beginning of this year and marked the first 20th Century Fox film to be released by Disney in 2020. The film starred Kristen Stewart as an oceanic researcher working for a deepsea drilling company who is fighting to survive after her rig is destroyed by what seems to be an earthquake. The film was directed by William Eubank, an up and coming director most known for directing the films Love and The Signal.
It was clear from the first trailer for Underwater that the film was going to be a creature feature revolving around monsters living near the Mariana Trench. Throughout the film, the creatures, later referred to as "Clingers," can be seen stalking the crew of Kepler 822 as they walk across the ocean floor to a nearby station. Clingers prove to be a huge and terrifying threat, but at the end of the film, it is revealed that they are not the main creatures the crew should have been worried about. A giant monster was revealed in the final act of the film, which Eubank later revealed to be H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. Now, some new concept art of the monsters has been released.
Eubank recently spoke with Bloody Disgustingand shared some new concept art from his film. In the interview, Eubank spoke about how Underwater came to be a secret Cthulhu movie and how the monsters in the movie evolved during production to what they look like in the finished product. A few pieces of concept art from Underwater can be seen below.
Even though Stewart's character, Norah Price, sacrificed herself at the end of the film in an attempt to kill all of the creatures, a sequel could still potentially happen. Emily Haversham and Liam Smith, played by Jessica Henwick and John Gallagher Jr. respectively, managed to escape the underwater terror thanks to Price. Newspaper clippings during the credits also revealed that Tian Industries would continue drilling after they cover up what happened with Price and her crew. The ending certainly opened the door for an Underwater sequel, but it's unknown whether Disney would want to expand the franchise given the film's performance at the box office and with Underwater's mixed reviews.
Like many giant monster movies, Underwater kept it's creatures a secret for the majority of the film. Keeping the creatures shrouded in mystery until the end of the movie certainly helped build suspense, but many fans love seeing the intricate creature designs, something that can't really be appreciated in the film with how fast the Clingers swim around. Fans can always pause the Blu-ray to get a better look at Underwater's monsters, but the level of detail that went into the creature designs is something that can easily be seen in the above concept art.
