Michelle Obama and Laura Bush thank healthcare workers and all heroes fighting coronavirus in joint One World speech
MICHELLE Obama and Laura Bush issued their heartfelt thanks to healthcare workers and all the American heroes fighting coronavirus in a joint One World speech.
The former First Ladies appeared on Global Citizen’s One World: Together At Home concert Saturday, where they gave touching separate messages to the nation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
As well as Bush and Obama, celebrity appearances included Lady Gaga, Elton John and the Rolling Stones in an effort to raise funds for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
“Michelle and I are thrilled to join you tonight in your homes for this special program,” said Bush as the they took turns addressing the country.
Obama said: “We’ve had the profound privilege of getting to know you and your families. Your hopes and your struggles, and your triumphs.”
Bush agreed that “the spirit and courage of the American people is most evident in times of crisis, and during this period of physical separation, we’ve never been closer.”
“Not just in our great country, but tonight we stand with the people of the world,” she added.
Bush described medics, pharmacists, veterinarians, sanitation workers and grocery store employees on the front lines of the crisis as “the fabric of our country,” saying their strength would “carry us through this crisis.”
“The coming days will not be easy, but this global family of ours is strong,” Obama concluded.
“We will continue to be here for one another and we will get through this crisis. Together. Thank you.”
