10 Underrated Found Footage Horror Movies You Can Stream Today on Amazon Prime
Found-footage horror consists of characters being thrown into seemingly plausible situations while captured in 'real-time.' Whether supernatural or not, that curtain of skepticism is pulled back enough to where audiences are unsure of what to believe.
Popular entrants include the Paranormal Activity movies and REC, but Amazon's Prime Video has a number of other found-footage horror movies worth discovering. Here are 10 underrated selections; all are available for streaming right now at Amazon.
10 Followers (2017)
Brook and Caleb are considered celebrities on social media. For their anniversary, the picture-perfect couple decides to go camping in the faraway woods. Of course, they document the trip for their adoring fans.
Little do they know, Book and Caleb are being followed by someone out to expose them for who they really are. Things are clearly not what they seem in this biting commentary about the cult of celebrity.
9 Hollows Grove (2014)
The FBI has recovered disturbing footage recorded by a crewmember of the Spirit Paranormal Investigation Team (S.P.I.T.). This group of television ghost hunters looks into a supposed haunted orphanage, Hollows Grove, for their next big show.
The hunters don't heed warnings about the place, though, and they are subjected to what appears to be real paranormal activity.
8 The Hunted (2014)
In his directorial debut, actor Josh Stewart (The Collector) plays a man named Jake. He and a friend start filming a pilot for a hunting TV show in the forests near the mountains of West Virginia.
While filming, Jake and his cameraman start to realize they are not alone. Someone, or something, has been following them every night as they venture into the woods by their cabin. Whatever is out there, it's not going to let them leave in one piece.
7 The Frankenstein Theory (2013)
A professor has a far-out theory that others may find hard to accept. Professor John Venkenheim believes that Mary Shelley's famous novel Frankenstein is actually non-fiction. With a documentary crew in tow, the professor visits the Arctic Circle in hopes of proving his thesis.
Venkenheim and his team brave the harsh cold to find the supposed monster that inspired the book. Unfortunately for them, they get their wish.
6 388 Arletta Avenue (2011)
At the film's eponymous address lives an ordinary couple, James and Amy. They go on with their daily lives without ever realizing someone has been following them. Coming into their house and watching them sleep. Filming them.
The unseen stranger doesn't stop with merely extreme voyeurism. No, he escalates things. It all starts when Amy vanishes with only a note left behind. James, scared and paranoid, accepts that someone has been stalking them, and they may have something to do with Amy's disappearance.
5 Gags The Clown (2019)
Inspired by a real-life series of incidents in 2016, the small city of Green Bay, Wisconsin has been plagued by evil clown sightings. One in particular, Gags the Clown, has the area on edge.
Three groups of people go in search of Gags one night: a local news reporter and her cameraman, a group of high school students, and a conservative podcast host. What they all find will be more than just a mischievous prankster in a clown costume.
4 The Possession of Michael King (2014)
A father and husband, Michael King, is devastated by his wife's sudden passing. He blames a psychic for her advice, which Michael thinks is to blame for his wife's death. To prove that the paranormal doesn't exist, Michael allows himself to be possessed.
Michael invites a variety of people, like demonologists, to try their hand at possessing him. Although he wants them all to fail, he gets far more than he ever bargained for.
3 Victor's History (2017)
An entitled and proud man looks to document his journey into researching his family's legacy. In doing so, he butts heads with his camera guy as well as comes across revelations that aren't exactly flattering.
Things get progressively worse for the subject, who learns his family has some huge skeletons in its closet. Will he expose his relatives' darkest secrets, or will he allow them to stay hidden in an effort to save face?
2 Evil Things (2009)
Shortly after New Year's Day in 2009, five college students leave New York City for a weekend trip. Along the way to their remote destination, they feel they are being followed by an unknown party in a van. They eventually lose their supposed stalker. Or so they think.
At an isolated house in the woods, the group relaxes until they come face to face with the stranger who has been pursuing them this whole time.
1 Butterfly Kisses (2018)
A filmmaker is given a box of old video tapes by his wife's relatives. The footage appears to be part of an unfinished film school project about a local urban legend called Peeping Tom. This spirit, known as a flimmern-geist or a flickering ghost, can only seen be in one's peripheral for a brief moment before disappearing. Peeping Tom is summoned by staring into the end of a train tunnel for one hour and without blinking.
The filmmaker then invites a video crew to capture his findings as he seeks to prove that Peeping Tom is real.
