Family transform home into colourful rainbow tribute to NHS

A family have transformed their home into a tribute for health workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

Danny Blackwell, 37, and his two children Lydia, 13, and Dainton, 11, initially placed rainbows in their window in Wakefield as part of the NHS heroes campaign.

It then took them eight days to change the outside walls into a multi-coloured tribute.

Each brick was painstakingly chalked in a different colour.

Blackwell, who works as a scaffolder, was looking for a way to entertain his kids and help them get some fresh air while following the government regulations.

He said: ‘I started my house with the kids for a bit of fun.

‘We finished about half the house, then we got the attention from one of the locals, who said: “Are you going to finish the rest of it too?”

‘We had run out of chalk, and he said: “That’s a shame, it would have looked nice to have been finished off properly all the way to the top.’

‘People started donating chalk and we ended up finishing the house.

‘It took me about eight hours and about 100 pieces of chalk in total.’

All over the UK, children have started putting rainbow pictures in their windows as a way of thanking NHS staff.

Homeowners have also been putting messages of support in their windows, including ‘stay safe’ and ‘be kind’.
