Woman creates stunning topsy-turvy Alice in Wonderland-inspired lounge for just £140

IF you can recite all the Alice in Wonderland films word for word, then you’ll be seriously impressed with this themed lounge inspired by the book and movies.

Lisa Murdock, 40, a mum-of-five from Northern Ireland, has always adored the magical story, so decided to pay tribute to Alice in her own home on a budget.

She started off with an Alice-inspired kitchen, then decided to transform her lounge, too – but only had £140 to achieve the new look.

Lisa told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: “I adore Alice in Wonderland so much and after doing the kitchen the lounge looked so boring.

“I had picked up an old fireplace and surround from a local buy and sell site months ago, but never got round to using it, so out came the paint.

“I love bright colours so I went with the same colour as Alice’s dress with a black and white decoupage on the shelf part.”

She said she picked up some Alice in Wonderland clay ornaments for £4 on eBay that she attached to the fireplace and blended with a sample of copper paint.

Lisa also placed some Alice in Wonderland tiles in the fireplace inserts, which she had decoupaged onto plain white tiles and sealed with a varnish.

Meanwhile, the coffee table was £10 from a local buy and sell site and the woman was kind enough to leave it in the garden so no contact was made in these uncertain times.

She said: “These were all ordered online due to not being able to go out and I don’t throw anything out so I have plenty of bits and pieces lying about!

“I used what decoupage paper I had in the house on the drawers and went for a brown and teal matte paint sealed with varnish. They were all sample pots.

“I’ve done the door also in Alice as it was so plain and I hate plain! All the wallpaper was purchased on ebay, and I have three different papers as they work so well together.

“I’m a real hoarder so I’ve had most of the stuff for a while and I just funked it up a bit.

“A friend painted the pictures for me as he knew how much I loved Alice and I couldn’t see anything I liked online!”

Lisa says that the renovation was the perfect lockdown task and helped to keep her mind off worrying about the pandemic.

She said: “It’s kept me sane with all the uncertainty of things that are going on at the minute, and the kids have also enjoyed helping.

“I was really chuffed at how it turned out and I can’t wait to get started on the bathroom.

“The whole project cost £140 including the wallpaper.

“The wallpaper cost £80, the table was £15, the decoupage paper was £6 from Zazzle, and the two sets of old pine drawers that I painted cost me nothing as I found them in a skip and I hate seeing stuff thrown out!”

Girl, 12, completely transforms dull family home in seven days for just £50 & she’s a dab hand with the power drill too.
