Cruz entered the bout seeking to regain the title he’d never lost in the cage; “The Dominator” was forced to vacate the bantamweight belt after a string of injuries limited him to one octagon appearance from October 2011 to January 2016. Dillashaw had successfully defended the title twice before facing Cruz in a Fight Night main event.

Two of the best strikers at 135 pounds, Dillashaw and Cruz bobbed, weaved, slipped and ripped for 25 minutes, with the outcome in doubt even after the final seconds ticked off the clock. Cruz wound up winning a close split decision to begin his second reign as UFC bantamweight champion.

Up next for Cruz, he gets a chance to become a three-time UFC champion when he challenges Henry Cejudo at UFC 249 on May 9 in Jacksonville, Fla.
