Coronavirus Live Updates: COVID-19 in the Bay Area, Thursday May 7

Despite optimism that has led some counties to ease coronavirus restrictions, California surged to more than 60,000 known cases of COVID-19. Fueled mostly by reports from Southern California, the state’s infection count reached 60,567, and 2,459 deaths.

While the number of infections continues to rise, the rate of the increase has generally been slowing, with some spikes here and there. On Tuesday, according to data compiled by this news organization, 2,546 new cases were reported, the largest number of new cases that have thus far been counted in a single day.

In the Bay Area, 165 new cases were reported Wednesday, along with six deaths — five in Santa Clara County and one in Solano.

One of President Donald Trump’s personal valets has tested positive for coronavirus, raising concerns about the President’s possible exposure to the virus.Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and senior White House staff are tested weekly, and were given another test after the valet, a member of the U.S. Navy, was confirmed to have the virus. Californians still are losing jobs at record levels, but the weekly totals are dropping from earlier highs. About 318,000 California workers filed claims for unemployment during the week that ended May 2, down slightly from the 325,000 who filed jobless claims for the week before. — George Avalos, 6:12 a.m.
