Love of sport inspired Heriot’s Blues player Katy Sanjuan to become a doctor

As an orthopaedic Speciality Doctor for NHS Fife, Heriot’s Blues player Katy Sanjuan has faced significant changes at work due to the coronavirus pandemic.

All of Katy’s routine clinics and surgery, such as arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery, have been postponed.

In addition to trauma work, Katy and her colleagues have been redeployed to help on the wards, in Accident & Emergency and in ICU.

An active childhood, including playing mini’s for Boroughmuir Rugby until she was 10, was the catalyst to Katy developing a desire to pursue a career in a sports related field.

‘‘I played a lot of sport and athletics when I was young and always had an interest in working with sports related injuries. This led me to choosing orthopaedics as a specialty,’’ she said.

‘‘I love working for the NHS. It’s such an incredible service to have.’’

Katy became hooked on rugby again in her second year of university after going to training with a friend.

Months of hard work at training lead to an invitation to a rugby development squad.

She earned her first caps at an international level in the first Scotland Women’s 7s team before making her a debut in France during the 2009 Women’s Six Nations.

‘‘The 2010 World Cup was incredible to be a part of and I even scored my first try for Scotland, against Sweden,’’ she said.

Katy passes on her knowledge of the game at training with her Heriot’s Blues Women team mates.

‘‘It is a special team to be part of,’’ she said.

‘‘The majority of the team had played little or no rugby before joining and the team has gone from strength to strength winning silverware, and almost gaining promotion after only one full season!

‘‘I’m really excited to see what next season brings.’’
