Girls: 10 Ways Hannah Got Worse & Worse | ScreenRant
Lena Dunham has created a series that was intentionally designed for its viewers to despise the four main characters. Whether it be Marnie, Shosh, or Jessa, we were always cringing at their lack of consideration for anyone other than themselves- Yet perhaps the most selfish of the bunch was Hannah Horvath herself, who never seemed to grasp how narcissistic she truly was.
She was the cause of much trouble throughout the series, yet as the show progressed, we were finally able to see some mild growth in her character. Despite this, she still seemed to get worse and worse as Girls went on. With that being said, here are the 10 worst things Hannah has done on the HBO series.
10 SHE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE EXTENT OF HER PRIVILEGE
When we were first introduced to Hannah, we realized immediately how ignorant she was when it came to her privilege. At the age of 24, Hannah was living off of her parents' money in New York City. While there's nothing wrong with that and we all do things at a different pace, the fact that she moved to one of the most expensive cities in the world while using her folks' dime was pretty selfish considering she was unwilling to get a job.
Despite her college degree, Hannah refused to earn a living and instead thought it was perfectly normal to just take from her giving parents. When they cut her off financially, her reaction was that of a young child.
9 SHE NEVER PUTS HARD WORK INTO ANYTHING
Maybe Hannah is just lazy, but it's pretty apparent that Dunham's character has absolutely no work ethic whatsoever. We see this at the very beginning when she puts no effort into trying to find a job, and we see it when she works at Ray's smoothie shop as she whines and complains the entire time.
She even goes so far as to call the smoothie place a toxic work environment even though Ray is her boss and they are already good friends. Despite the fact that she's offered an amazing book deal, she refuses to even try her hand at working on the project that she promised someone. Nice going, Hannah!
8 HANNAH MOOCHED OFF OF MARNIE AND WASN'T THANKFUL
Let's be honest. Hannah was totally ungrateful when it came to her living situation with Marnie in season one. When we learned Marnie had been paying off Hannah's bills, we were shocked at the lack of contribution Hannah had put forth into their living situation. She barely so much as offered to help clean up, and she was incredibly ungrateful for everything Marnie had done for her.
7 GLAMORIZING HER TRIP TO PICK JESSA UP FROM REHAB
The first problem Hannah made here was accepting Jessa's offer to pick her up from rehab. If your friend needs all the help they can get, you should encourage them to stay so they can get the assistance they need in order to fix their drug and alcohol abuse problem.
Yet Hannah decided to take Jessa's offer and pick her up while glamorizing the entire situation along the way. She classified the whole experience as a road trip that was designed to heighten her creativity rather than seeing it for what it was. Even Adam, her loving boyfriend, was getting seriously fed up with Hannah's selfish ways.
6 HANNAH'S RESPONSE TO HER EDITOR'S DEATH
This was perhaps the moment when we realized how messed up Hannah truly was. When Hannah's editor passed away suddenly, all she could think about was what would happen with her book deal.
She even went to his funeral and had the audacity to ask his grieving wife what would happen to her book now that her editor was dead. Her behavior is that of a child rather than the fully grown adult that she is.
5 MAKING UP A STORY ABOUT HER IMAGINARY COUSIN
People were shocked over Hannah's reaction (or lack thereof) towards her editor's death. The two had built a solid friendship so Adam was especially shocked by Hannah's lack of emotion towards the tragic situation. In order to prove to Adam that she wasn't a total monster, Hannah made up an entire story about the reason why she didn't like to show her feelings.
She lied through her teeth as she told Adam that she had a cousin who died from muscular dystrophy and that's why she was so afraid to discuss death. This was a blatant lie, and this imaginary cousin never even existed.
4 FLASHING HER BOSS TO KEEP HER JOB
Shamelessly, Hannah flashed her privates to her boss in some lame attempt to keep her job as a teacher. This is all kinds of inappropriate, and we are flabbergasted that Hannah would go this far especially in a school environment.
Her behavior was unacceptable and despite the fact that Hannah has done some outlandish things over the seasons, this was arguably the most idiotic on the list.
3 HER WHOLE TEACHING CAREER IN GENERAL
Hannah's teaching career was one big disaster after another. Although there's no problem with professors having their own styles of teaching in the classroom, Hannah was inappropriate with her children by exposing them to work that was far beyond their comprehension level considering their age. Phillip Roth for middle schoolers? Come on now.
That's like giving a kindergartener Catcher In The Rye. Plus, she had an extremely close relationship with one of her students and they even got their tongues pierced together. This is inappropriate behavior, which we guess is Horvath's bread and butter.
2 UNABLE TO LET ADAM BE HAPPY WITH MIMI-ROSE
When Hannah came back from her creative writing program at Iowa University, she expected Adam to be there waiting for her with open arms despite the fact that she was supposed to be gone for years.
It's understandable that Adam would try to branch out and date other people considering he and Hannah never sat down to discuss their relationship, and it had been crumbling to pieces anyway. Yet instead of responding to the situation maturely, she camped out in the apartment that she left for Adam and acted like a little kid.
1 HANNAH'S REACTION TO HER DAD COMING OUT
One of the most immature moments we saw from Ms. Horvath was her reaction to her father's coming out of the closet. Instead of comforting her parents and helping them with the whole life-altering situation, Hannah chose to make it all about her. Classic Hannah.
