The Russian Federation remains the top source country for Schengen Visa applications for years now, with a total number of 4,133,100 Schengen visa file in 2019, or 23.3 per cent of the total number of applications, which is 16,955,541.

Newly published Schengen Visa statistics for 2019 reveal that the number of Schengen visa applications filed in Russia has marked another increase compared to the previous year, despite the fact that it remains far from the 6,995,141 applications submitted by Russian nationals in 2013 alone.

In 2019, Schengen consulates in Russia received 11.8 per cent more applications than in the previous year, and 6.3 per cent more than in 2016.

Over the years, the number of applications filed at the Schengen consulates in Russia has gone up and down. However, the rejection rate has slightly increased each year.

Despite the increase, it still remains amongst the lowest rejection rates in the world regarding Schengen visa issuance.

Throughout the years, the number of Schengen visa requests filed and rejected in Russia has been as follows:

  • 2019 – 61,863 applications denied out of 4,133,100 – at a rejection rate of 1. 5 per cent
  • 2018 – 57,425 applications denied out of 3,695,670 – at a rejection rate of 1.6 per cent
  • 2017 – 52,770 applications denied out of 3,885,899 – at a rejection rate of 1.4 per cent
  • 2016 – 38,566 applications denied out of 3,177,621 – at a rejection rate of 1.2 per cent
  • 2015 – 45,367 applications denied out of 3,467,317 – at a rejection rate of 1.3 per cent
  • 2014 – 54,088 applications denied out of 5,768,182 – at a rejection rate of 0.9 per cent

In 2019, the Finnish consulate in St. Petersburg, has been once again the busiest Schengen consulate in the world with 644,858 Schengen visa applications received alone. The Spanish consulate in Moscow comes second.

Out of the total visas granted, 3,350,160 of them were multiple-entry visas, which means the beneficiaries were eligible to enter the Schengen Area more than once within the given time frame.

Despite the increase in application for 2019, there will be a drop in applications for 2020 in Russia, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, as all Schengen countries have halted Schengen visa application and issuance in Russia.
