A couple of weeks ago, I saw a post on my friend Hannah's Instagram stories. On returning to school, her son Marlow was asked to bring in a piece of fruit. So far, so innocent. But Hannah, a cook and a mother-of-two, wondered why, as usually her son and his classmates were given that at morning break. This was provided by the government-funded School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS), which until March, provided a free piece of fruit or veg to every four to six-year-old at a state-funded primary school. Hannah discovered the scheme had been suspended without announcement or explanation.
