Suicide Squad Director Suggests Fans Demand The Ayer Cut
David Ayer, director of the 2016's Suicide Squad, has told fans they should demand the release of the his cut of the movie. Production on the DC Extended Universe movie was infamously troubled, with a number of extensive reshoots ordered by Warner Bros., reportedly changing Ayer's vision for Suicide Squad to the point where the final movie was unrecognizable from his original vision.
As a result, the version of Suicide Squad that was released to theaters was a muddled, confusing affair that turned off critics and was seen as a failure by fans who were expecting a more coherent romp with DC's most eccentric group of characters. In recent months, Ayer has used his Twitter to drop hints about what changed in the Suicide Squad reshoots, similar to the way Zack Snyder used Vero to show off his version of Justice League. And when the release of the Snyder Cut was announced, many fans started saying that Ayer's cut of Suicide Squad should be given a chance too.
Now, Ayer himself has joined the chorus, taking to Twitter to say that the Ayer Cut does exist, and that if fans want to see it, they need to campaign for it the way they did for the Snyder Cut. The tweet he posted was a reply to a fan who asked if Ayer could say anything about his rumored cut of the movie. Ayer responded that fans will have to encourage HBO Max and AT&T, who own the streaming service, to let it "see the sunlight." You can see both tweets below.
Ayer, whose latest movie The Tax Collector, dropped a trailer yesterday, has been vocal in his support of the Snyder Cut and has also repeatedly said that he would like the chance to show the world his version of Suicide Squad. He has claimed in the past that it would be easy to complete, and makes for a better movie than the one that hit theaters. But he has also cautioned that his Suicide Squad cut is likely to never be released.
Ayer's new comment may seem to fans like a beacon of hope, but it could also be a sign that the director has given up on seeing his cut of the film being released. By handing over the campaign to his fans, he's tacitly admitting that he has no power to make the Ayer Cut happen. It's a pragmatic move from the filmmaker, as all signs point to DC and Warner Bros. having moved on from his movie. The fact that a sequel/reboot of the franchise, James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, is currently in post-production proves that.
However, for those who still think the Ayer Cut is worth seeing, there is a small amount of hope in the case of the Snyder Cut. Many, including Snyder himself, thought it would never see the light of day, but the fan campaign seemed to force the hand of the studio. Perhaps if a big enough group of fans make enough noise, they could see a similar miracle happen with the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad.
