A Celebrity Edition of Netflix’s Floor Is Lava Could Be in the Works
Netflix’s reality offering Floor Is Lava could be getting a celebrity version. Since the streaming platform launched the game show series in June, the show has topped the platform's charts in US, Canada and UK, making it the talk of the Internet. Owing to this, the creators took no time to tease a celebrity edition of the show that's based on the imaginative childhood game.
Floor Is Lava offers quarantined viewers everything that they could want from a new reality show premiering during a lockdown: a nostalgia-inducing concept, a mindless plot, people making fools of themselves, and a $10,000 cash prize for jumping off couches. The simple, fun nature of the series made the Netflix show the perfect binge-watch necessity. Hosted by Rutledge Wood of Top Gear fame, the show also introduced viewers to some never before seen hot, glowing lava, and contestants that disappeared when they fell into it. Curiosity peaked on social media platforms like Twitter, where viewers asked Netflix, the showrunners and even the contestants to reveal their cards. A variety of questions including, "What’s the lava made up of?’ or "Does it burn?" and even "Do the contestants really die after falling inside the lava?’ were shot across by some inquisitive netizens. This list of curious cats also included a few well-known faces who were just as intrigued by Floor Is Lava as the rest of the world.
While the game show’s producer and Haymaker Media co-owner Irad Eyal had earlier revealed that the "lava" was a proprietary blend created by Hollywood’s number one slime company, he didn’t spill the beans on the recipe. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, however, the producers, including Eyal teased about a possible celebrity edition of Floor Is Lava in the future. When asked if they had anyone reaching out to them for a celebrity version, they mentioned a few famous names.
Starting off by saying that they’ve indeed been getting a lot of tweets and Instagram stories of celebrities watching the show, VP of development at Haymaker Media Megan McGrath added, “Kristen Bell was watching with her family. We would love Kristen and Dax [Shepard, her husband].” She also mentioned how Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Oh no I think I’m obsessed with The Floor is Lava... have you watched this? It’s ridiculous,” tweet made the entire team fangirl on their text message threads. McGrath shared that, “Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted about it. I think that was one of the ones that sent everybody into a tizzy on our end. Yeah, there are a ton of celebrities who are reaching out.”
Irad Eyal also expressed that the most important thing is that it’s not enough just to be a celebrity: In order to be a part of Floor Is Lava’s adventures, one also has to put together a team and think about the other two people they would be most willing to trust out on the lava field. “So that's what we're looking for. We're looking for teams of three that are really committed to it,” the showrunner suggested. Considering how easily Floor Is Lava has caught the public eye, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Netflix must already be thinking of a season 2 and possible spin-offs. Although production might see a lax due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it won’t be stopping fans from predicting which celebrities they might soon see swinging off chandeliers.
