Centigrade Updates: Release Date & Story Details | Screen Rant
IFC Midnight will soon unleash Centigrade, a horror film concerning a couple trapped under snow and ice that's sure to counter the summer heat. Horror movies pitting man and woman against the elements are nothing new within the genre, and neither are snowbound horror films set in winter environments. Also not new, for that matter, are horror movies in which characters are trapped in a single location and face death if they don't find a way out.
That said, just about every idea has been done before in some form. Whether a particular movie works or not is often much more about the execution of its concept, and not whether that concept is original. To that end, Centigrade hopes to cement itself alongside icy horror classics like The Shining and The Thing, as well as underrated entries like Adam Green's Frozen, in the realm of worthwhile winter horror. Will it freeze out the competition? IFC Midnight certainly hopes so, having snatched up the film for distribution.
Directed by Brendan Walsh, and written by Walsh and Daley Nixon, Centigrade will send a chill through moviegoers in just a few short weeks. Here's what horror fans can expect from the new film.
Centigrade releases via video on-demand and in select theaters on August 28, 2020. Or at least that's the plan, as the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic makes it unclear whether theaters in most U.S. states will be open or not by then. At least the simultaneous VOD arrival gives horror fans who can't or would prefer not to go to their local theater another option to see the film on release day.
Centigrade stars Vincent Piazza and Genesis Rodriguez as Matthew and Naomi, an American couple traveling in the arctic mountains of Norway back in 2002. The two fall asleep while pulled over, and wake up to find themselves snowed inside their SUV. Soon, the plot becomes a race against time, as food supplies are short and so are tempers. Adding to the stress is Naomi being eight months pregnant. It's a simple premise, inspired according to director Walsh by multiple true stories, but one ripe for a tense, suspenseful thriller.
Included above is the full trailer for Centigrade, which serves to establish both the character dynamics and the hopeless situation Naomi and Matthew end up trapped in. While the trailer says the story is "inspired by true events," which is technically true, not basing it on any one particular real-life tale of survival was a good move, as now the audience won't be able to predict whether the couple lives or dies.
