Arrowverse Costumes Look Fantastic When Drawn In The DC Animated Style
Recent Arrowverse fan art shows the heroes of The Flash, Supergirl, and upcoming series Superman and Lois in the DC animated style. The first two shows have been a key part of The CW's DC TV lineup for the past several seasons. The Flash is now the most senior of all the Arrowverse shows, thanks to flagship series Arrow's conclusion earlier this year. Meanwhile, Supergirl started out on CBS, before moving to The CW for season 2. Both series are on the lighter side, especially compared to Batwoman and Arrow when it was still on. Their heroes, Barry Allen and Kara Danvers, also share a similar goofy energy when together that's become an asset during crossovers.
Tyler Hoechlin's Superman doesn't have his own show yet, but he will in 2021, when The CW introduces Superman and Lois to its superhero lineup. Both Hoechlin and his co-star, Elizabeth Tulloch, have appeared in the Arrowverse before. Hoechlin started out guest-starring on Supergirl but has gone on to play a role in the Elseworlds and Crisis on Infinite Earths events. Tulloch has also appeared in the crossovers, playing a big role in Crisis especially. Superman and Lois will have a crossover of its own in season 1, teaming up with Batwoman, though that announcement was made prior to Ruby Rose's departure from her series.
As Superman will be such a key part of the Arrowverse going forward, it makes sense he's featured in a recent set of images by user AlwaysBi on Reddit. In them, Superman, Supergirl, and the Flash are all animated in the classic DC style. Though it's neat to see these particular characters reimagined this way, the real star is the costumes, painstakingly recreated in animated form. The Flash and Supergirl are both dressed in the costumes of their most recent seasons, meaning Melissa Benoist's character gets to show off the pants version of her outfit. Check out the images below:
As the artist mentions, the images were created in the style of Young Justice, an ongoing animated series on DC Universe. The recreation works impressively well, especially with the level of detail paid to the costumes. Though the Arrowverse has never employed animation before on The CW, it's had two animated series on the streaming platform CW Seed. Both Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray aired two seasons, with several Arrowverse actors stopping by throughout their runs for voice work. Grant Gustin recurred as the Flash on Vixen, while Benoist did the same on Freedom Fighters, though as the evil Earth-38 Supergirl, Overgirl.
Fan art like this is a great reminder of fan creativity, especially in the comic book world. Because there are so many different ways to imagine a superhero, the options are virtually endless for fans. In this case, the artist cleverly mashes up two different depictions of the DC world to great effect. In fact, it's easy to imagine other Arrowverse characters getting the same treatment, though these three images are impressive enough on their own.
