The Deets: It’s time to defund baseball’s fun police
Major League Baseball has countless issues, but players trying to police the fun out of the game is one of the biggest.
Daniel Murphy doesn’t seem to understand how hypocrisy works.
Of course, the Rockies’ first baseman has made it clear he has no problem being ignorant and that tolerance isn’t one of his strong suits, so that’s not all that much of a surprise.
But as Murphy rounded the bases Thursday in Denver after hitting a go-ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Giants — after a saucy strut, and point to the dugout — he stared down San Francisco centerfielder Mauricio Dubon.
Murphy’s issue: Dubon had enjoyed hitting a three-run homer in the top half of the inning just a bit too much for Murphy’s liking. So to show his displeasure towards Dubon’s scene, he made a scene of his own.
Baseball has a litany of problems. Labor issues. Covid issues. Marketing issues. Style-of-play issues. I could go on.
But one of the league’s biggest issues is that fun police — the hypocrites who retaliate against players with some personality to their game. The guys who forget that baseball is a game. They guys who think that only those blessed with righteous indignation can show emotion.
Did Dubon pimp his home run Thursday? Absolutely. And he should have — it was a big home run and heaven forbid anyone shows emotion amid a game. But Murphy and then Charlie Blackmon did the same thing after that. Apparently they’re allowed but the rookie isn’t.
I’m over it. This kind of get-off-my-lawn attitude is bad for the game.
So in this 60-game season where rules can change on a whim, I have a suggestion for commissioner Rob Manfred: suspend killjoys.
Hell, the league suspended Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly eight games for not being able to control the ball against the league’s protected witnesses in the prosecution against… the witnesses. It’s well within the protocol to suspend any player who makes a comment that is in the same vein as “play the right way” for a game or two.
And perhaps if MLB does that, we’ll have a game that’s more entertaining to watch with players that a national audience might actually care about.
What We Learned
The 49ers lose two offensive men… George Kittle didn’t opt-out of the season, but depth offensive linemen Shon Coleman and Jake Brendel did. Offensive line depth is a strength on this team and both players were possible camp cuts (Brendel more than Coleman), so this might be good news for the Niners, who will retain both players for next year, as this season’s contract carries over.
Giants 4-Rockies 6… Hours after the bullpen was nails against the Rox, it gives up a win and a series split in Colorado… Tyler Anderson, in a revenge game, was fantastic in five innings, only allowing two hits and no runs… Hunter Pence now has a batting average of .034 with an OPS of .200… The Giants did drop Stephen Duggar and Andrew Suarez from the roster. How long until Pence is released, too?
Rangers 4-A’s 6… Oakland’s bats are alive, and provided Mike Fiers enough run support to pick up his first win of the season…. Three home runs in two days for Matt Olson. It’s a terrible mustache, but he has to keep it for a while. My girlfriend will be disappointed (seriously), but it’s for the good of the team… Olson might have a sub-.200 batting average, but his OPS is an extremely respectable — even above-average .858 this season. What happens when he actually gets to around .250?… Next up on the list of A’s who need to bust out of funks: Matt Chapman and Marcus Semien.
Dave Kaval was online… And here I thought Burch Smith was the king of spin in Oakland. Kaval, whose failure at the Laney site was so egregious a competent team owner would have fired him on the spot, is pretending like suing a state regulator over a steel company’s pollution is the only thing standing in front of the team and building Howard Terminal. That’s laughable. Almost as laughable as expecting an environmental impact report when Kaval said it would be ready. That was nine months ago and it’ll likely be another nine months before we see a draft… I’d be working on that, but he’s tweeting. The team’s long-suffering fans deserve better… I’ve made this bet with him, though: If Howard Terminal gets a shovel in the ground, I’ll work on the site in whatever job they can scrounge up for me, a non-union member, for three days, no pay. If I can’t work on the site, I’ll be Kaval’s personal errand boy for the same length of time, for the same lack of pay. I can wash a car — inside and out — with the best of them. It’s a shame I doubt Kaval’s car will get the Deets Detail…. What’s more of a shame? Losing the core of a championship-worthy team because the organization is chasing a pipe-dream stadium concept. Just build a new stadium on the Coliseum site.
