Natasha Romanoff Is No Longer Marvel’s Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff has held the role of Black Widow in the pages of Marvel Comics for more than 50 years. While there have been other characters who have become Black Widow, Natasha has been a consistent force in the comics and on the big screen since debuting. In a new comic, things are about to change.
A brand new series starring Natasha Romanoff will be coming in September, that will feature a change of pace for the kickass Avenger. In a brand new trailer for the series, Natasha's time as Black Widow has seemingly come to an end and the only people who are of what's really going on are some her greatest enemies.
Marvel dropped the trailer which showcases the upcoming Black Widow series from Kelly Thompson (Captain Marvel), Elena Casagrande (Wonder Woman), and Jordie Bellaire (Pretty Deadly). In the action-packed first look, Natasha is seemingly trying to carry on with her life away from the Black Widow moniker. However, someone is tracking her moves, taking pictures of her and tapping into video feeds. The video teases that "Natasha Romanoff is the Widow no more," and "only her greatest enemies know why." The video shows Natasha kicking some butt, but ends with her falling off a tall building.
It's not clear what ends Natasha's time as the Black Widow besides the fact her greatest enemies are involved somehow. Perhaps, people thought she died after falling off the building and she decided it was the best time to walk away from her life as a superhero. Or, maybe it's related to the trauma from the event. Will a new Black Widow take her place? It would be a great time to reintroduce Yelena Belova ahead of the Black Widow solo film. Thompson told Marvel that her vision for Black Widow was "bold" and "highly personal."
It’s a bold new vision for Black Widow and one I am really hoping people can get excited about,” Thompson told Marvel.com earlier this year. “Our first arc has some of the stuff you would expect in a Black Widow book, but I think twisted in a new way that’s interesting – and where she ends up at the end of this highly personal and life changing story is ALSO interesting!
Thompson has done some really great work with Marvel recently, specifically with her West Coast Avengers, Captain Marvel, and Deadpool arcs. If anyone can take Black Widow in a bold new direction it's Thompson. She's one of the best writers in the business, making Black Widow #1 a must pick-up for fans of the character.
