As stars reveal their bare faces to world, celebrity make-up reveals how J-Lo & Co get their glow
HAVE you dialled back your beauty routine since lockdown? Lots of us have, including a raft of celebrities making do without make-up.
This week, Jennifer Lopez joined Adele, Rihanna and Leigh-Anne Pinnock in becoming the latest star to show off her natural beauty.
Jenny From The Block shared a “no make-up” selfie with her 127million-strong army of Instagram followers. While it felt freeing to let our skin breathe, many of us are ready to start putting our face back on again – be it for the office, the pub or those Zoom chats with friends.
But after so long, where do you start? Here, Yasmin Harisha asks top make-up artist Lisa Sloneem to compare stars’ cosmetic-free snaps to their usual glam look – and for her tips on how to match their style.
ADELE: CAT-EYE FLICK
AT the age of 32, Adele looks to be moving away from her “vintage glam” style. You only need to look at her long wavy locks to see she is embracing a more relaxed California vibe. But it’s her iconic classic cat-eye flick we all want to copy.
Lisa says: “What sets Adele’s eyeliner apart is that it’s wide the whole way along the lash line. Using a black cream liner with an angled brush, start at the inner corner of the eye and keep the brush close to the lashline. Let the brush do the work as you follow your lash line towards the outer corner of the eye.
“Turn the brush and hold it at an angle in line with the end of your brows, then draw the point of the flick and then join down to the outer corner of the eye.
“If you don’t have a steady hand, take a piece of medical tape and stick it, running from the corner of your eye to the end of your brow. This is your stencil. But do remember to remove the tape after you have applied the liner!”

RIHANNA: COLOUR TONING
SINGER turned beauty entrepreneur Rihanna recently revealed what lies beneath during a video tutorial about her skincare and make-up routine. As you would expect from the savvy businesswoman, the clip showed Rihanna using products from her own Fenty range.
The 32-year-old Bajan chart-topper loves to luxuriate in a bronzed, shimmery glow. Lisa says: “Rihanna’s look is very tonal, with one colour flowing through on her eyes, cheeks and lips – creating bronze, contoured perfection.
“First, take a shimmery bronze powder and swipe on your cheekbones, eyes and forehead, almost like you are contouring but with your bronzer.
“To ensure you get the same glossy lip effect as Rihanna – which will tie in with the rest of your make-up – dab the same shimmery bronzer you just used on your face and add it to your lipgloss.”

J-LO: SMOKY EYES
J-Lo shared her ‘no make-up’ selfie but has been rocking a smoky eye for decades[/caption]JENNIFER LOPEZ shared her “no make-up” selfie with the caption, “Good morning everyone!!! #MorningFace” – and what we wouldn’t do to look like her at 7am. But the 51-year-old singer and actress has been rocking a smoky eye for three decades of stardom.
And this is the look we want to master. Lisa says: “You can cheat your way to a smoky eye using colour sticks. These create much less mess than eye shadow. Apply a paler, shimmery colour under the bottom lash line and on the lid.
“Then use a darker stick very close to the lash line and draw past the outer corner of the eyelid slightly. Apply the same colour stick in the socket line and join your other line. With a soft, fluffy blush, blend the colours into each other to create that trademark smoky look.
“If you don’t have a colour stick to hand, search around your make-up bag for any colours that might blend well together. For example, you can use a highlighter on the base of your eyelid and then blend a darker bronzer or blusher through the socket.”

MAYA JAMA: RADIANT HIGHLIGHTER
TELLY presenter Maya is never afraid to poke fun at herself. The 25-year-old stunner regularly shares selfies pulling faces and with minimum make-up.
When she’s done up, her face is not usually heavily made up, but she always gets her glowing skin spot on.
Lisa says: “To create Maya’s enviable complexion, choose a tinted moisturiser that will let your natural skin shine through. Apply sparingly and massage into your skin with your hands.
“Use a minimal concealer to cover blemishes and cream bronzers and blush to keep the glow going. A touch of Vaseline on the cheekbones makes a lovely natural highlight too.”

MAURA HIGGINS: HIGH CHEEKBONES
Maura Higgins shared this natural selfie during Mental Health Awareness Week showing off her cheekbones[/caption]WE saw Maura’s natural beauty on last year’s Love Island but she is rarely seen without her make-up-enhanced lips and cheekbones.
Maura, 29, shared this natural selfie during Mental Health Awareness Week. Lisa says: “For a defined bone structure like Maura’s, apply a dark contouring cream under your cheekbones, either side of the nose, outer edge of the forehead and under the chin.
“Blend gently with a brush. Next, apply a strong metallic powder or cream highlighter above the cheekbone, along the centre of your nose, middle of the chin and forehead and just above your lip.
“For the illusion of a fuller pout, use a soft toothbrush to gently exfoliate the lips. This helps to reflect light.”

LEIGH-ANNE PINNOCK: BOLD BROWS
JUST like her Little Mix bandmates, Leigh-Anne, 28, never has a brow out of place . . . and for her, more is always more.
Leigh-Anne is just as stunning in her “no make-up” selfie but her brows are barely there.
Lisa says: “Leigh-Anne’s look is very Nineties, with matte brown shades around the eyes and on the lip. Everything about it is over-the-top, including the brows, which frame the face.
“To add maximum volume to your brows, try a brow pomade – that’s a cream-based formula – and brush upwards to lift brows using an old, clean mascara wand.

“If you don’t have a pomade, use a matte brown eye shadow matching your brow colour.
“Using an eyebrow brush, start from the inside of your brow and lightly fill between the hairs, using a flicking motion in the direction of the hair growth.”
