If players have ever watched Wipeout or American Ninja Warrior and considered how fun it would be to try those crazy obstacle courses for themselves, look no further than Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. This colorful battle-royale is a riveting mix between fun and pure mayhem as players compete in a frenzy of mini-games in a quest to be the last one standing. The latest game by the team at Mediatonic is garnering a lot of attention and is on track to be one of the most successful titles of the year.
Fall Guys contains over 20 unique mini-games that are each randomly selected at the start of every round. At its core, the game is a strange physics based platformer with an air of competitiveness mixed in. Each match starts with upwards of 60 players, all of whom are trying to survive through the final round. Players dawn an adorable jelly-bean character as they dive right into the wacky challenges Fall Guys pits them against.
Every match contains 5 rounds and each round can last approximately 1 to 5 minutes max. This means that in the span of about 15 to 20 minutes, 59 contestants will fall and one player will come out victorious. This means that the average Fall Guys match runs for about 5 to 10 minutes. These very quick rounds mean players will always be left on their seat as they not only fight some of the funky physics in the game, but compete against other contestants who are trying to knock each other over. Unlike other battle-royales like Fornite, which give ample time to sit around and strategize, Fall Guys doesn’t provide that. The moment the timer starts counting down, players need to dash out and survive the challenges ahead. There is no time to think, simply go out there and run.
Fall Guys will select one random mini-game at the start of every round. Some of these mini-games are quite straightforward and simply have players running to the end of the course while others require strategizing between teammates. In one instance competitors will be fighting against each other, trying to grab and topple the avatars around them. The next moment rivals will need to band together and use teamwork to move onto the next round. This creates an interesting level of competitiveness where it’s everybody for themselves in one instance and enemies joining forces the next.
At the end of every round, the remaining players will move onto the next challenge while the rest are eliminated. This pattern continues until the final round which will determine who the ultimate winner is. However, no matter when a player falls out of the competition, they will always earn Kudos and Fame. These two types of in-game currency can be used towards cosmetics items for their Fall Guy. As such, the longer a player survives the more “money” they can earn. If being crowned the winner of a match isn't the motivator players need, perhaps saving up enough to unlock a special Fall Guys costume is.
The fast-paced environment of Fall Guys will have players holding their breath as they carefully time their jumps and doges. One wrong move can spell disaster while every match won makes players feel like a super-powered athlete.
