Melvin was born in the Philippines and grew up in Vancouver, Canada. He first started paddling in dragonboat and OC and then transitioned to stand-up paddling in 2007 in (Gangneung) South Korea since the surf wasn't consistent and because he didn't have an outrigger canoe. Since then, Melvin became the first SUP retailer in South Korea with his company called Pine Ocean SUP.
