Another 55 people have died of coronavirus in the UK, rising the total number to 46,556.

According to the latest government figures, 309, 763 people have tested positive for Covid-19, with 758 additional cases recorded in the past 24 hours.

The numbers released by the Department of Health cover fatalities in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.  Earlier, NHS England said that a further 15 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospitals, bringing the total number to 29,401.

Scotland and Northern Ireland have gone more than three weeks without recording any new deaths, though in the former the city of Aberdeen has gone back into lockdown following a local outbreak.

In Wales, which saw the biggest lifting of restrictions to date on Monday, one more person died of the virus.

The death toll was updated as hundreds of NHS workers took to the streets demanding a pay rise is brought forward as a reward for working tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Nurses, junior doctors and other NHS employees were excluded from a recently announced 3.1% pay rise for 900,000 public sector workers.

In addition, new rules on face coverings came into force across England and Scotland today following a recent spike in coronavirus cases.

Anyone visiting a museum, gallery, cinema or place of worship will be required to cover their nose and mouth.

The number of public places where a mask is mandatory has been extended due to fears about a potential second wave of coronavirus cases hitting the UK.

Infections rates were already rising before the onset of this week’s heatwave, which has seen huge crowds flock to beaches and beer gardens.

Pictures from today show sunseekers pilling into Britain’s top beauty spots for a second day in a row, despite warnings yesterday that people should stay away because of the risk of spreading coronavirus.

Record numbers headed to the coastlines on what was the hottest August day for 17 years, prompting councils to warn social distancing wasn’t possible in the busiest spots.

With temperatures again predicted to hit the mid-30s today, several beaches in Bournemouth were already under red alert by midday – according to an app developed by the council.

Some groups even choose to camp on the beach overnight in order to secure a prime position on the sand.

Angry locals criticised tourists for dumping their rubbish, illegally parking and putting pressure on emergency services.

There were similar scenes in Margate and Broadstairs in Kent, where the local district council warned visitors to go elsewhere.
