10 Shows To Watch If You Like Community | ScreenRant
Very few shows were as smart, inventive, and as wonderfully odd as Dan Harmon's Community. Although, never a ratings juggernaut, the show developed a devoted cult following who praised the show's concept episodes, complex diverse characters, and clever writing.
The show has found a new resurgence in popularity on Netflix as both old and new fans have been binge-watching it over the last few months. Now, many are left craving more. While there is no show quite like Community, there are a few series that can help fill the void.
10 30 Rock
Tina Fey's 30 Rock was one of the most defining shows of the 2000s. Smart, snarky, and bizarre, the series followed the life of Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), a head writer of a sketch comedy show, trying her best to keep her show on the air.
Fans of Community will love the clever, fast paced humor of the series while also delighting in the talented cast that included Alec Baldwin, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Krakowski.
9 The IT Crowd
There are hundreds of workplace comedies out there but very few are as hysterical and endearing as The IT Crowd. This British cult series followed the misadventures of an IT department and their supervisor who knew nothing about computers.
The series is notable for its clever dry humor and its satirical take on tech culture. Fans of Community will also easily fall in love with the show's characters. In particular, fans will find similarities between Moss (Richard Ayoade) and Abed. Both are lovable nerdy geniuses who struggle with social interaction. Moss even shares a Troy and Abed-like friendship with the other IT employee, Roy (Chris O'Dowd). Fun fact: the show was set for a US adaptation starring none other than Joel McHale but never made it past an unaired pilot.
8 It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Set to be the longest-running live action-comedy series in the U.S., It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, tells the story of a group of misfits who run an unsuccessful Irish bar in South Philadelphia. This hilarious dark comedy brilliantly examines the human psyche and social issues in some of the strangest yet most memorable ways.
One of the show's most unique aspects is the chaotic ensemble of depraved, narcissistic, and shameless characters that fans cannot help but love. Like with Community, the strength of the show lies in the quality of its characters and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia has some of the intricately written characters on TV.
7 Rick & Morty
No Community recommendation list would be complete without including Dan Harmon's other masterpiece, Rick & Morty. Created along with Justin Roiland, this adult animated sci-fi series follows the insane adventures of a mad scientist and his grandson.
The series has been praised for its clever writing, absurd storylines, and its twisted social commentary. Like Community, the animated series has a level of self-awareness and depth that makes it so much more than just an average comedy.
6 Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet
Created by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, and Megan Ganz, Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, gives fans a fun workplace comedy about video game developers and their struggles to keep their World of Warcraft-like game going.
Funny, inventive, and a little weird, the series takes a hilarious look at video-game culture. Notably, the series has an incredible performance by Charlotte Nicado. She plays the quirky head of engineering Poppy Li who has to make her way in the male-dominated industry. The series also stars Community alum Danny Pudi as the shrewd head of monetization, Brad Bakshi.
5 Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was perhaps one of the most unexpected comedies of the last few years. This quirky, heartfelt comedy chronicled the adventures of Kimmy Schmidt as she embarked on a new life in New York after being held captive in a bunker for years.
Co-created by Tina Fey, this series embodied the same optimistic, hopeful tone that made Community such a delight to watch. This wonderfully bizarre show was also very poignant and was able to both humorously and cleverly deal with issues like gentrification, mental health, and gender inequality.
4 Archer
When fans think of Community, the last thing they think about is this adult animated series that follows the escapades of a private spy agency. Although Archer is a lot more crass and nihilistic, both shows are maestros at referential humor and genre parodies.
Witty and genuinely ridiculous, Archer impressively mixes politics, pop-culture, and compelling storylines to make it one of the most riveting animated series of the last few years.
3 Party Down
Party Down was one of those great shows that barely anyone saw. The series followed the lives of a group of aspiring actors who were stuck working at a catering company. Created by Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas, this snarky show took a hilariously satirical look at the food service industry and the delusions of making it big.
Like Community, this show had an ensemble of lovable misfits that people just couldn't help but root for. Starring Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Jane Lynch, and Megan Mullally, this lighthearted series is a fun must-see.
2 Arrested Development
Arrested Development followed the highly dysfunctional Bluth family, who had to come to terms with the fact that they had lost all their wealth. It all fell on their older brother Michael to keep everybody in line which he miserably and hilariously struggled to do.
This genuine laugh-by-minute absurd series became one of the most influential shows of the 2000s and had the ability to intricately craft its humor unlike any other show before and really any other show since. This award-winning show also had an incredible comedic cast that included Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, and Jessica Walter.
1 Spaced
Spaced is perhaps the most similar to Community than any other show on this list. Set in London in the late 1990s, it told the story of Daisy and Tim, two strangers who pretend to be a couple in order to get an apartment. With Edgar Wright as the director, it is not surprising that this British series completely pushed the boundaries of the conventional 20-minute sitcom.
Like Community, Spaced is often described as a show made for nerds by nerds. Full of referential humor, insane characters, and zany adventures, the series is a definite must-see. The series also starred comedy geniuses Jessica Hynes, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. Sadly the series only lasted fourteen episodes but it is worth every second.
