Cursed Films Season 2 Updates: Release Date & Story | Screen Rant
On July 6, 2020, Shudder officially announced that their original series Cursed Films will return for season 2 with Jay Cheel as its director. The show features an array of supposedly cursed horror films with interviews from the cast and crew on the topic. Here is everything we know about Cursed Films season 2.
When season 1 premiered on April 2, 2020, it became an immediate success and drew the attention of horror fans and critics from all subgenres. It included Poltergeist (1982), The Omen (1976), The Exorcist (1973), The Crow (1994), and Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). The docuseries focused on some of the genre’s most notable curses that plagued post- and pre-production on each film. For instance, season 1, episode 2 explored the supposed devil’s blessing on The Omen set when several bizarre instances of plane malfunctions impeded development in its early stages.
Cursed Films took the mythology that followed each of these films and explored it clearly and concisely in order to debunk the possible curse or offer a difference of opinion on it. The most shocking aspect of each individual episode was the insight that the cast and crew provided on the complications of continuing on with sequels or releasing the films in general. Season 2 of Cursed Films may feature different films, but could also revisit and expand on season 1’s curses.
As of July 7, 2020, Shudder has not announced a specific release date for Cursed Films season 2. Due to the complications of filming in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that production will not begin until restrictions are lifted. It is entirely possible that they could take the route of providing film equipment to each participant to conduct interviews with as much social distance as possible. The probability of this occurring is not high but it is a possibility given the interview-based format of the series. Regardless, it is likely that audiences will have to wait until the spring of 2021 for Cursed Films season 2.
Shudder revealed that they will be expanding beyond North American horror and reaching into non-western films. It is likely that the season could be dedicated to one location in particular, though this has yet to be announced. Due to the fact that folk horror is one of the most popular subgenres at this current moment, it is possible that the series will explore folklore-based curses and films.
While Shudder is reaching beyond North America for their new line-up of cursed films, rumors have spread online that Rosemary’s Baby (1968) might make an appearance. Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan, supposedly played the devil in Roman Polanski’s film, which was denied, but the Black Pope may have also played a hand in the film’s curse. Other North American films with curses include The Amityville Horror (1979), The Possession (2012), and even James Wan’s highly successful paranormal film and franchise, The Conjuring (2013).
There is an array of films that the Shudder docuseries could utilize for season 2 that could even warrant a season 3. At this moment, there have not been any official announcements on what films will be included, nor have there been any non-western films rumored to be in the line-up. Regardless, Cursed Films is returning for season 2 and will undoubtedly unveil the truth behind some of horror’s most infamous curses.
