Pochettino ‘contacted’ as Juventus eye Tottenham favourite after Sarri axe
Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been ‘contacted’ over becoming the new Juventus manager following the sacking of Maurizio Sarri.
Despite leading The Old Lady to their ninth consecutive Serie A title, ex-Chelsea boss Sarri was sacked earlier today.
His 12 months at the club conclude with an almost two-thirds winning percentage. But despite that lofty figure, Champions League heartache at the hands of Lyon on Friday appears to have proven costly.
Now, according to The Daily Mail, former Spurs favourite Pochettino is being lined up to fill the void.
The outlet state that the Argentine is not only the favourite to take the helm, but has already been contacted by Juventus representatives.
Club president Andrea Agnelli’s reported first choice is Zinedine Zidane. But with the Frenchman in such good standing at The Bernabeu, prising him away from the club where he is a legendary figure will be incredibly difficult.
Napoli head honcho Simone Inzaghi is also touted, but he is described as being ‘unlikely’ to leave his current post.
Juventus’ quest to return to the fore in Europe could therefore lead them to Pochettino.
The 48-year-old is currently without a job after leaving Tottenham midway through last season. And despite their league form taking a notable dive, the Argentine is still highly regarded in world football.
His European prowess was also displayed in his final year with the club, where he took Spurs to the Champions League final after roller coaster victories in both the quarter and semi-finals versus Man City and Ajax respectively.
Tottenham nearing world-class defender transfer
Meanwhile, Tottenham are reportedly nearing the impressive signing of Milan Skriniar after holding talks with Inter Milan.
The Slovakian has established himself as one of the world’s leading centre-halves during his time at the San Siro. But he appears to have lost his way a little under Antonio Conte after dropping down the pecking order.
Skriniar has been out of form and watched from the sidelines on Wednesday as Inter defeated Getafe in the Europa League.
From being an ‘unsaleable’ asset last year, Inter are now reportedly ready to listen to offers for Skriniar.
Manchester United and Manchester City are also believed to have an interest in the 25-year-old, who is under contract until 2023.
Tuttosport claimed recently that United had ‘tabled a €65m (£58m) offer’ for the player. That has matched the bid on the table from City.
However, the Italian paper believes it is Spurs who are most likely to sign Skriniar.
