Deauville: Betting Preview, racecard and tips for Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest
ON A quiet weekend on home soil, Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest is not to be missed across the channel.
There is plenty of British interest, but the one the raiders all have to topple is Andre Fabre’s Earthlight.

France’s sprinting sensation remains unbeaten in six starts, five of those coming as a juvenile.
His only run this year was a cosy win at 2-5 in Listed company. This is much tougher – arguably the stiffest competition he has faced in his career.
It’s the first time he races against older horses, and the first time he races beyond six furlongs. Even if it’s only an extra half furlong.
He’s there to be shot at in my book. He’s the one to beat, but 15-8 is too short given the challengers heading over.
Earthlight got the better of Golden Horde twice at Group 1 level at two, and they re-oppose here.
We know Clive Cox’s sprinter has kicked on, we don’t know that truly about Earthlight.
But Golden Horde was beat fair and square in the July Cup last time out and his style of racing can leave hum vulnerable at times.
You would have liked to have seen him finish stronger in what was probably a below standard July Cup. He could well kick on again, but I think he’s best watched here.
Don't miss the best of Sun Racing
Aidan O’Brien runs Wichita and Lope Y Hernandez. Wichita is beginning to become a nearly horse at this level and they drop him in trip now. Of the two I prefer his stablemate who chased home Pinatubo last time out.
Diamond Jubilee winner Hello Youmzain ran below par in the July Cup. He needs to bounce back, and the suspicion grows that he may be reliant on some give in the ground.
The three-year-olds get 4lbs from their elders here, but it is Godolphin second string SPACE BLUES that I want to back in this.
It’s a quick turnaround from the Lennox Stakes for Charlie Appleby’s horse. But he appears to take his racing well, and we know he travels fine.
He was third in this race last season, but has definitely improved this season and this track clearly suits him.

His Goodwood win was a clear career best and he won that in commanding style. It also demonstrated his speed and turn of foot. He won’t be rushed of his feet dropped back in trip.
He looks the bet to me.
Wooded looks the other threat from the home team. While the others look up against it.
BETTING ADVICE: Space Blues (1pt win – 6-1)
