49ers tap into pipeline for another ex-Washington lineman, Spencer Long
Spencer Long just became the third former Washington offensive linemen to join the 49ers this offseason.
Long, who played last season for the Buffalo Bills and in 2018 with the New York Jets, signed Saturday morning with the 49ers, according to his agency, JL Sports.
Long began his NFL career in 2014 in Washington and is reunited with left tackle Trent Williams and guard Tom Compton. Another link: Chris Foerster, Washington’s offensive line coach in 2014 who’s been a 49ers consultant since 2018.
Long got released by the Bills after they signed Brian Winters this week, and the 49ers had a vacancy on the interior once Jake Brendel opted out Thursday, along with offensive tackle Shon Coleman.
Long’s experience at guard and center make him a viable candidate for the 49ers. Starting center Weston Richburg (knee) is on the active/physically-unable-to-perform list, and right guard Mike Person retired after starting the past two seasons for the 49ers.
