The Hogwarts Houses Of Deadwood Characters | ScreenRant
On the surface, Deadwood and Harry Potter might not seem like they have a whole lot in common. Harry Potter is a children's fantasy series/pop culture phenomenon. Deadwood is a western solely for adults and was lowly rated during its time on the air for HBO.
However, one similarity they do possess is the fact that the characters are richly complex in both stories. In Harry Potter, Hogwarts houses are the ways in which characters are sorted by their various personalities. Considering each Deadwood figure has a different lifestyle, they would certainly be spread out among the various Houses of Hogwarts.
10 Seth - Gryffindor
Seth has a righteous sense of justice in the world. However, his morality often comes into conflict with his extreme temper. Doesn't that just sound like Harry Potter, one of the most prominent Gryffindors ever?
Gryffindors have a fiery sense about them (hence why a lion represents them). They frequently try to do the courageous, just thing, but their tempers do tend to get the better of them from time to time - just like Seth.
9 Al - Slytherin
No doubt about this one. Not all Slytherins are evil, to be sure, but anyone as evil as Al Swearengen belongs solely in Slytherin. He's a sickening character who wreaks tragedy throughout the Deadwood community.
His behavior manifests in intense misogyny and racism. Just relegate Al to the dungeons of Hogwarts and be done with him. That man is not one to be redeemed, no matter how genial he might seem to those he trusts.
8 Alma - Gryffindor
An immense spirit persists within Molly Parker's Alma Garret. Alma suffers a great deal of tragedy throughout Deadwood, but what she never is is passive to it.
Alma is always an active participant in her own life, fighting to make it better every step of the way. The fact that she has courageous agency in the face of all terrors and tragedies is testament enough to her Gryffindor spirit.
7 Doc - Ravenclaw
This one's also a no-brainer. Deadwood definitely had more characters willing to shed blood than stop it. But the efforts of Doc could make up for the villainous behavior of ten villains on Deadwood.
As an expert on medical science and a student of "the right thing to do," Doc is a Ravenclaw because of his immense smarts in all facets of life. It's a rare thing in Deadwood.
6 Ellsworth - Hufflepuff
Ellsworth, Jim Beaver's character on Deadwood, is assuredly a Hufflepuff. No character on Deadwood was unanimously beloved by the others, but Ellsworth might have come the closest.
If he wasn't engaged with such duplicitous behavior, Ellsworth might be seen as a big Teddy bear. He never tries to stir up trouble and he keeps his head down to mind his own business. This strand of pleasantry is strongly tied to Hufflepuffs.
5 Joanie - Ravenclaw
Of the main characters, Joanie is definitely the other Ravenclaw. Joanie works as a leader in the Bella Union and her job requires her to be quite the savant about how business operates in Deadwood.
Joanie is one of the smartest in the entire town as she has a keen sense of how to survive in the unforgiving town. Her shrewd business sense and opportunistic personality unequivocally portrays her as a Ravenclaw.
4 Cy - Slytherin
Cy Tolliver is another figure of importance at the Bella Union. However, his personality has more of a Slytherin bend to it than Joanie's fiery Gryffindor attributes.
He's not as shrewd as Joanie, but he definitely mirrors her in their combined senses of ambition. Cy's ambitious nature often manifests in deplorable behavior, which is why he is more categorized alongside the other snake representatives.
3 Dan - Slytherin
Dan is another no-brainer for being sorted into Slytherin. If Al Swearengen is as clear cut for Slytherin as Draco Malfoy is, then Dan might as well be the Crabbe and/or Goyle. He is the enforcer of Al's many crimes, after all.
The fact that he goes along with Al's decision-making shows that Dan might not be the most ambitious Slytherin. But his cruelty and his eventual realization of his own actions certainly depicts him as a figure potentially worthy of redemption. Some Slytherins do arrive at that point, after all.
2 Trixie - Hufflepuff
Trixie is just overflowing with compassion and empathy for the people she meets on a daily basis. Her language is often filthy and her behavior is often ill-mannered. However, she has a heart of gold and loves to kindle relationships with the people in her life.
Hufflepuffs are known for their ability to extend kindness to anyone they meet and that's why Trixie is a perfect match. She's a badger through and through.
1 Calamity Jane - Gryffindor
Like Trixie, Calamity Jane is another character who leads with empathy. However, her behavior is decidedly more eccentric than Trixie's and she acts like an aggressive figure with frequency.
After all, if not all Slytherins are evil than not all Gryffindors are entirely courageous (example: early Neville). Calamity Jane is frequently fearful, but her Gryffindor nature comes from the fact that she always strives to bring good into the soulless town that is Deadwood.
