All four seasons of The Legend of Korra are coming to Netflix, but what time can you begin to binge (or rewatch) the series? Nickelodeon found a smash hit in the mid-2000s with Avatar: The Last Airbender. The show ended after just three seasons but has enjoyed a renewed popularity in 2020 after arriving on Netflix. The Last Airbender served as the beginning of a continuously expanding franchise, which also includes the follow-up/spinoff series The Legend of Korra.
Set 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender, the next Avatar after Aang is the star of The Legend of Korra. Korra is a teenager who has a very different journey from Aang. She is a member of the Southern Water Tribe, and mastered waterbending, earthbending, and firebending by the age of 17. Korra then begins to train in airbending with Aang and Katara's son, Tenzin, serving as her teacher.
Fans of The Legend of Korra will now have the opportunity to rewatch the series on Netflix, while others might be planning to finally watch the show for the first time. In either case, the anticipation for The Legend of Korra arriving on the streaming service is immense, and all four seasons will be released on Netflix at midnight PT, or 3am ET, on Friday August 14th.
Even though fans were excited to see an Avatar: The Last Airbender's followup in the 2010s, The Legend of Korra never became quite as popular as the original animated series. Avatar gained in popularity and viewership as the show continued on, but The Legend of Korra lost viewers with each passing season. Fortunately, the show's arrival on Netflix will give those who stopped watching a chance to finally finish the show. Meanwhile, Avatar's popularity on the service could bode well for newer fans wanting to see what happened next.
Depending on just how popular The Legend of Korra is on Netflix, the future of the franchise could change. Netflix already is developing a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender with the show's original creators. If The Legend of Korra is another big hit, perhaps plans for a live-action Legend of Korra show will be discussed as well. Perhaps Netflix could even become the home of a new animated series set in the Avatar franchise. But even if Netflix is content with their current plans, at least now The Legend of Korra finding a home on the service will bring the complete Avatar franchise to one place.
