The first official screenshot from Spider-Man: Miles Morales has just been released to the public, giving fans another glimpse at developer Insomniac's newest open-world Marvel adventure. Fans have been looking forward to the upcoming PlayStation 5 spin-off game ever since it was first revealed at the PS5 showcase event back in June.
Since then, details have been coming forward at a steady pace regarding Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which has been confirmed to be its own standalone game despite early reports that it would serve as DLC to Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man offering. Fans have also gained a first look at Miles Morales’s PS5 box art in the past month, as well as an enticing peek at the game's production in the form of a photo of Nadji Jeter, Miles's voice actor in both the Insomniac games and several other recent Marvel productions, in full motion-capture gear.
Now, the first official promotional screenshot of Spider-Man: Miles Morales has been released as part of a recent Entertainment Weekly article on Marvel’s new wave of video games, such as Square Enix’s forthcoming Marvel's Avengers title and 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man. The Miles Morales image is a simple one, depicting the teen in his black-and-red Spidey costume on the streets of New York City, crouching in a classic Spider-Man pose as the nighttime traffic halts behind him. The impressive visual detail of the PS5's graphics can also be seen in the ray-traced puddles on the ground beneath Miles's hand, which realistically reflect him and his surroundings.
As the game’s title implies, Spider-Man: Miles Morales will pick up where the ending to the aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man left off, with the titular Brooklyn teen discovering his newfound superpowers and embarking on his first steps as a hero in his own right. In the comics, Miles first took on the mantle of Spider-Man after the Peter Parker of the Ultimate universe died at the hands of the Green Goblin (don’t worry, Peter is still alive and well in the world of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and will be back with his own sequel in due time). He was eventually transported to the main 616 continuity (where he was almost renamed as the groan-worthy "Spy-D") and has since gained a steady stream of love from fans due to being a well-executed legacy character with an increasingly resonant background. Miles has even scored a starring role in the critically acclaimed 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, and is expected to make a return in its planned sequel next year.
Entertainment Weekly’s official Spider-Man: Miles Morales isn’t particularly revealing, but it is still a striking image of Miles in his early days as one of Marvel’s defining heroes of the current generation and a nice showcase of the PlayStation 5’s impressive graphical capabilities. Players will be able to web-swing thought NYC once more when Spider-Man: Miles Morales releases for the PS5 later this year.
